A Glimpse Into A Private Session
I often get questions about what exactly a private session entails, so I thought I would share a glimpse into a recent one for you.
Logan is 10. This was our third session together. I walked in the door and could see and feel that his energy was low. He started out our session with his head down, quiet, and barely communicating. I knew before we could start our session, I needed to connect with him on something other than yoga and mindfulness. His dog was there to greet me, so I sat down and we started to talk about our dogs. Connecting with Logan in this way helped spark a dialog and broke the ice a bit.
After doing our routine check-in practice, he shared that his energy was indeed low. We began with a self-connecting body scan practice noticing how his body felt at that low energy he was experiencing. After the scan he used colored pencils along with his sensation vocabulary list he has been curating, to draw and write what he noticed throughout his body. We slowly shifted into some steady and controlled energizing breath work, where he is learning the superpower of using his breath to help him either power up, steady, or settle and calm. We then moved into a few organized, full-body rhythmic movements, power poses with positive affirmations, a playful focus, and balancing activity, followed by a grounding and stabilizing movement to bring things back down. After each individual practice, we checked back in to see what, if anything, was changing. The session closed with a tense and release (progressive muscle relaxation) practice to help prepare and settle in for a couple of minutes of relaxing rest. Logan loves to play sports and often describes that his body feels tight. A progressive muscle relaxation technique helps teach him how to release tension in his body and experience what it feels like to hold tension and what it feels like to relax and let go.
When he sat back up, we again checked in on how he was feeling. He shared that his energy was higher and his mood had shifted. Even though his energy was higher it was not out of control. He was smiling, making eye contact while speaking with me, and his posture and body language had also changed. This was a different kid in front of me from when we started.
My goal for the session was meeting Logan exactly where he was. Not trying to change or judge him, but rather holding space for it all. Offering and teaching him vocabulary to express and share what he was feeling, helped him honor and be with where he was in each moment. Using his inner resources – his breath and body – provided an opportunity to move and process the energy through his body. Not only did he acknowledge where he was at throughout the entire session, but he also experienced in real time the power of how these practices can move and shift his energy, mood and overall feeling.
Private sessions are customized and tailored to what it is a child needs support with. I provide each student the opportunity to discover how to use their inner resources so they can not only thrive but also navigate the challenges of everyday life.
